The purpose of the award is to support creative and diverse work in operations research in the early career of the recipient. The candidate must be within ten years of receiving a PhD and be in a tenure track academic appointment.

The award will be presented at the Annual Meeting and includes an engraved citation plaque, a cash award and a potential professional development funding supplement.

About the Award/Namesake

This award is to honor the legacy of longtime member and fellow of INFORMS, Donald P. Gaver, Jr. (February 16, 1926 - February 11, 2018). He served as chairman of the INFORMS Applied Probability Society in 1989 and was highly respected among his peers as well as a mentor to students. He was an elected member and fellow of numerous societies in addition to INFORMS, including the American Statistical Association, Institute of Mathematical Statistics, The American Association for the Advancement of Science and The National Academy of Engineering. He also received the Distinguished Civilian Service Award presented by the Secretary of the Navy that stated in the Citation in part:

"

Professor Gaver’s innovations in stochastic models, data and decision analysis, and simulation are internationally recognized and have been applied in worldwide areas ranging from nuclear reactor safety to complex system reliability, telecommunications, and maritime problems. His invention of an efficient numerical inversion of the Laplace transform is a basic tool used throughout science and engineering. He developed fundamental methodologies for analyzing queuing systems and assessing system reliability and maintainability that continue to be used today. The Naval Postgraduate School has benefited from the many international visitors that Professor Gaver has attracted for consultations and collaborative work.
