The committee selected as winner of the 1956 Lanchester Prize the paper, "A Monte Carlo Model for Military Analysis," by Richard E. Zimmerman. The winning paper appeared as Chapter 21 of Operations Research for Management, Volume II, Johns Hopkins Press, 1956.
The committee considered Zimmerman's paper outstanding with respect to each criterion applying to an operations research paper of its type, except that the paper did not describe the application of the method to a real problem. The committee selected the paper in spite of this fault because it learned that the method is now being applied to real problems by two military operations-research groups. It is the committee's belief that the method will prove highly useful in the solution of practical problems.
