CATONSVILLE, MD, March 5, 2019 – From the very first moment the term operations research (O.R.) was created during World War II, it has been indelibly connected to the development of modern military warfare. And while today, O.R. sees applications in every industry around the world, it continues to serve an integral role in military operations, from manpower and equipment, to strategy and intelligence.
To capture the role of O.R. in the military, both historic and current, INFORMS, the leading international association for analytics and O.R. professionals, has released a new installment of its Editor’s Cut series, Military O.R.: The Science of a Secure Nation. This collection is comprised of leading journal and industry articles and multimedia content that serve as a touchstone for classic examples of military O.R., with a particular focus on the areas of budget, strategy, tactics, and practice.
Harrison Schramm, CAP, Senior Fellow, Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments, and Paul Nicholas, an operations research scientist at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, serve as the volume editors for the Military O.R. edition of Editor’s Cut. This open access offering is brought to you by INFORMS and is available at
