Management Science Paper Among Finalists for Prestigious NIHCM Awards in Journalism and Research

Finalist paper co-authored by two INFORMS members

CATONSVILLE, MD, March 22, 2021 – Authors of a paper examining how information systems can abate racial and other biases in technology, published in the INFORMS journal Management Science, have been chosen as one of five finalists in a prestigious competition for the National Institute for Health Care Management (NIHCM) Award. The winner is recognized with a prize of up to $20,000.

The paper, “The Role of Decision Support Systems in Attenuating Racial Biases in Healthcare Delivery,” is authored by two INFORMS members, Brad Greenwood of George Mason University and Hilal Atasoy of Rutgers University alongside Kartik K. Ganju of McGill University and Jeffery McCullough of Berkeley College.

This year marks the 27th Annual NIHCM Awards. The research finalists are chosen from hundreds of applicants for their rigorous studies. NIHCM founding president and CEO Nancy Chockley said the work from the finalists are likely to spur innovation and improve care.

“Entrants placed a strong emphasis on high-impact work on disparities in at-risk populations, racial justice and improving a broad spectrum of health outcomes,” said Chockley in a press release issued by NIHCM.

The winner in each category will be announced in April and will receive a $15,000 to $20,000 cash prize.
