David Shmoys of Cornell University Honored with the INFORMS 2024 George E. Kimball Medal

BALTIMORE, MD, November 18, 2024 – David Shmoys of Cornell University is awarded the 2024 George E. Kimball Medal for recognition of distinguished service to INFORMS and to the profession of operations research and the management sciences (OR/MS). Shmoys has been a standout member of INFORMS, volunteering countless hours to the betterment of the INFORMS community and the entire OR/MS profession.

David Shmoys is the Laibe/Acheson Professor of Business Management and Leadership Studies, Professor of Operations Research and Information Engineering, and Professor of Computer Science at Cornell University.

Shmoys, an INFORMS Fellow, was also named the 2023 Philip McCord Morse Lecturer and presented his lecture at the 2024 INFORMS Annual Meeting in Seattle, Washington, October 20-23. He is a previous recipient of the INFORMS Lanchester Prize, Khachiyan Prize, Daniel Wagner Prize and the Foundations of Computer Science (FOCS) Test of Time award. He has served as chair for several INFORMS award committees, including the Lanchester, von Neumann, Farkas, Nicholson and Khachiyan prizes, as well as chair of the INFORMS Fellows committee. Schmoys has also held several senior editorial positions with INFORMS journals including Operations Research, INFORMS Journal on Optimization and Mathematics of Operations Research. He currently serves on the INFORMS NSF Liaison Committee.

“Professor Shmoys’ contributions to INFORMS cannot be fully captured by merely listing his numerous roles and volunteerism,” says Elena Gerstmann, INFORMS Executive Director. “His dedication to INFORMS and the profession of operations research and the management sciences has been invaluable, enriching our community and propelling the profession forward. We are honored to recognize his tireless service with the 2024 George E. Kimball Medal.”

In his acceptance speech, Shmoys noted, “I think that one of the best traditions of the academic profession is embedded in the concept of ‘paying it forward.’ The Kimball Medal is awarded for ‘service to the profession.’ This is the wrong way around – I am the beneficiary of the profession, especially as embodied by those individuals who have been, and still are, my role models, mentors and guardrails along the path of my career. The debt that I owe them is enormous, and anything that I have done to pay it forward is just a drop in the bucket.”
