CATONSVILLE, MD, October 19, 2020 – Most people have seen or heard from a friend, neighbor or family member about a product or service they’ve used and how their experience was. It’s called observational learning or word-of-mouth. These communications don’t provide an unbiased assessment of true quality. Given this, businesses are faced with the difficult decision of determining when and how to spend their ad dollars. New research in the INFORMS journal Marketing Science finds when consumers learn about products/services from other consumers, a business may actually want to spend more money to credibly signal its quality.

But rather than diminish the quality of care, new research in the INFORMS journal Information Systems Research finds that increasing wider use of telemedicine in the emergency room (ER) can yield positive results for patients and providers alike.

It found that a candidate’s mass media advertising is more likely to influence independent voters, while the campaign’s “ground game,” targeting voters through grassroots outreach, is more effective at reaching a candidate’s base.

INFORMS, the largest international association of operations research (O.R.) and analytics professionals and students, has officially named 12 outstanding members as Fellows, one of the highest honors in the O.R. profession. The 2020 INFORMS Fellows will be inducted during the Virtual 2020 INFORMS Annual Meeting, November 7–13. INFORMS Fellows are honored for their outstanding lifetime accomplishments and contributions in operations research and analytics.
