Brief Biography
Warren H. Hausman was the last President-Elect of the Operations Research Society of America (ORSA). Hausman studied economics at Yale University prior to pursuing graduate study in industrial management at the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He received his PhD in 1966 under the supervision of Gordon Kaufman in 1966. Hausman first taught as an Assistant and Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Business and Public Administration of Cornell University prior to joining the faculty of his alma mater, M.I.T.s Sloan School. In 1973, he joined the Graduate School of Management at the University of Rochester.
In the 1970s, Hausman’s publications largely dealt with automatic warehousing systems. From 1976 to 1978, he published a series of influential articles with Purdue University professor Leroy B. Schwarz and M.I.T. Professor Steven C. Graves. In 1977, he left Rochester for Stanford University’s Department of Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management where he has since remained. Hausman chaired the department for a decade, starting in 1982.
Hausman is a leader in the research of supply chain management. He has analyzed how Radio-frequency identification (RFID) technologies can revolutionize the management of supply chains. This has involved the real-world investigation of RFID applications in retail environments, logistics, and manufacturing operations. From 1973 through 1997 he co-authored several editions of Quantitative Analysis for Business Decisions with Charles P. Bonini and Harold Bierman.
Hausman has held a number of professional society positions. From 1987 to 1989, he served as Council Member of The Institute of Management Sciences (TIMS). Four years prior, he was on the selection committee for the Frederick W. Lanchester Prize. Though Hausman was elected President in 1994, he was unable to serve his term as ORSA and TIMS merged in 1995. He was, however, an inaugural Board Member of their successor society, the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS). Hausman has served on the editorial boards ofManagement Scienceandthe Journal of Financial Quantitative Analysis.
In 2002, Hausman was named an inaugural Fellow of INFORMS. Since then, he has been elected a Fellow of both the Production and Operations Management Society (POMS) and the Manufacturing and Service Operations Management Society (MSOM).
