Brief Biography
David Boyce is a transportation scientist and fellow of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS). Boyce’s research interests have included network equilibrium and traffic assignment, urban planning methodologies, and intelligent transportation systems. He attended Northwestern University prior to pursuing graduate study at the University of Pennsylvania. From 1963 to 1965 Boyce received three degrees from Penn: a Masters of City Planning, a Masters of Art in Regional Science, and a PhD in Regional Science.
Boyce taught at the University of Pennsylvania for eleven years, first as an Assistant Professor of City and Regional Planning and then as a Professor of Regional Science and Transportation. During that time he became an active member of the Operations Research Society of America (ORSA) and Regional Science Association International (RSAI), serving as secretary of the later for nine years in the late 1960s and 1970s. Boyce eventually became President of that organization in 1987.
In 1988, Boyce left Pennsylvania to join the Department of Civil Engineer at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Shortly afterward, he began a long tenure as an associate editor of Transportation Science. At Urbana-Champaign, he was a member of the Illinois Universities Research Consortium (IURC), a position he continued to hold until 1993. Boyce accepted the position of Director of the Urban Transportation Center at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1998. Five years later, he was elected president of IURC, holding that position for two years. Even though Boyce retired from UIC in 2003, he has been an Adjunct Professor at the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science at Northwestern University since 2004.
In 1994, Boyce and former UIC student Bin Ran co-authored Dynamic Urban Transportation Network Models: Theory and Implications for Intelligence Vehicle-High Systems. The text was based around Boyce’s lecture notes on the subject and presented a new generation of models for solving dynamic travel choice problems.
Throughout his career, Boyce has worked closely with the Chicago Area Transportation Study, the Regional Transportation Authority of Northeastern Illinois, and the Illinois Department of Transportation. He has done consulting work for a number of firms and institutions including the General Motors Research Laboratories, LJL and Associates, JFT and Associates, and the University of Texas at Austin.
Boyce is an elected Fellow of INFORMS and RSAI. RSAI presented him with the society’s Founders Medal in 2000. For his contributions to the discipline and practice of transportation science, the Transportation Science and Logistics Society of INFORMS honored Boyce with the Robert Herman Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003.
